MCLEAN, Va. - A new children's library has opened in Chicago, Ill. as the result of a collaboration between Homewood Suites by Hilton and early childhood education nonprofit The Books for Kids Foundation. The new Homewood Suites Books for Kids Library at the Carole Robertson Center for Learning - North Lawndale, located at 3701 West Ogden Avenue, will ensure that all of the more than 235 at-risk children from low-income and mostly single family homes served by the center will have access and regular exposure to new, age-appropriate books regardless of their parents' or guardians' schedules or means.
Following a ribbon cutting ceremony led by Cerathel Burnett, executive director of the Carole Robertson Center, Leslie Janes, vice president of programs of the Carole Roberston Center, Andrew Medlar, Chicago Public Library, Children & Young Adult Services, and Dawn Koenig, vice president of brand support for Homewood Suites by Hilton, Koenig and Christian Kuhn, vice president of marketing for Homewood Suites by Hilton, led a reading of 'Lewis the Duck Lends a Helping Wing" with the help of attending dignitaries.
"Reading aloud to young students, starting when they are preschoolers, plays an important role in helping these children develop fundamental language, listening, learning and literacy skills," noted Koenig. "Our library at the Carole Robertson Center will provide a valuable resource for the community, which we hope will provide more children with the tools needed to improve literacy levels across the board."
The Chicago opening is the sixth in a series of Books for Kids libraries that Homewood Suites has opened over the past two years. The first five libraries opened in Memphis, Tenn. (July 2010), Washington, DC (September 2010), Irving, Texas (July 2011), Phoenix, AZ (September 2011) and a second in Memphis, Tenn. (July 2012). With each open library, hundreds of children are being provided access to resources and opportunities previously unavailable, furthering Homewood Suites' mission to improve literacy amongst youth and impact the communities where Homewood properties are located.
The Carole Robertson Center for Learning provides quality child, youth, and family development programs for Metropolitan Chicago-based families and facilitates community advocacy on child and family issues. The agency was founded in 1976 by community residents who rallied to save their local school age program when its sponsoring agency closed, and has since grown to ten times its original size and evolved into a comprehensive family development agency.
